First recorded in 1870–75

It appears in the fall and may be found in company with the Oyster mushroom, late in December, frozen solid.

The oyster mushroom is found from March to December and is always a very acceptable mushroom.

One edible relative of the oyster mushroom grows usually on decaying elm stumps as late in the year as November.

Otherwise they were canned as the Tricholoma and oyster mushroom.

One of the best ways to cook an Oyster mushroom is to fry it as you fry an oyster.
